For the Love of Thread!

I mentioned in an earlier blog post that I was going to share some of the embroidery I am working on, so here it is! When Jeanne Oliver had her semi annual sale, I purchased a class by Wendy Brightbill (I’m a big fan of her work) on botanical embroidery. It was a mini course but there was one simple moment when she mentioned using fabric or felt for leaves on her embroideries. That immediately resonated and soon my head was swimming with ideas. These were the first pieces I tried, using felt as an embellishment. I would also like to try some florals using fabric to embellish. The possibilities really are endless, with ribbon, lace, doilies, etc. And even what you use the embroideries for. I am hoping to incorporate some into my mixed media art, but you could also use them as wall hangings, part of a quilt, embellishment for a tote, a journal cover, etc.

There is something so satisfying about embroidery and I love that it’s something I can do in bed at night, or pack it up and take it anywhere. Even the story I was reading this summer, Gathering Blue has embroidery as its main theme (which was a surprise to me.. I was just finally reading it as a sequel to The Giver, which I read in Gr 5), and I just love how God lines things up like that. I was listening to Yvon Attia the other day and she was talking about the embroideries in heaven!

My latest project is to bind my own journal, and making a custom quilted/embroidered cover for it. Hopefully I can share some of that process here soon!

Happy creating!
