Book Review: New York in Bloom

It seems inevitable that I would do some book reviews on here, as I live and breathe books! My love for books started early; my mom was the librarian at the elementary school I went to growing up, and so I spent a lot of my afternoons after school helping her out in the library. In the summer my mom would let me sign out an entire grocery bag full of books, and it felt like such a special treat. Even as far back as grade 2, I was devouring such delights as Spunky’s Diary, Anne of Green Gables, The Babysitter’s Club, and Pee Wee Scouts.

My book tastes now revolve around art, flowers, and faith. I love to go treasure hunting at the thrift store for books. My most recent book purchase is New York in Bloom by Georgianna Lane. I didn’t know what to expect as I blind bought this book online, but it was too good a price to pass up ($3 from bookoutlet Canada), and it was definitely worth the risk! This book is so gorgeous. If you want a book that you don’t even feel the need to read, this is the one. You could come back again and again just for the photos.

This book is an exploration of New York City through the lens of the author, where she finds so many scenes in the city where the architecture is mirroring nature. It is truly fascinating and so beautiful. According to the back cover, “Author and photographer Georgianna Lane is known for her romantic, light-infused images of flowers, gardens, and iconic travel destinations. Her work has been published internationally in books, magazines, calendars, greeting cards, and beyond. She is also the author of Paris in Bloom and the upcoming London in Bloom.”

The book is broken into 5 sections: Intro, Parks and Gardens, Floral Studios, Market Flowers, and Floral Displays. There is also a resource section with: Creating your own New York City-style bouquet, and a field guide to common spring-blooming trees and shrubs in New York City. There is also a list with a guide to spring blooms in New York, the time of year, and location– for any ultra dedicated bloom hunters.

I have not read the book in its entirety, but from what I’ve read it is well-written, descriptive, and lovely. Georgianna truly gives a wondrous tour of the natural delights of the city and invites readers to experience a not-commonly associated side of New York: the flora. I have never been to New York City, and had no idea the depth of detail in the art and architecture. It’s truly amazing how much the art mirrors nature. So many beautiful, breath-taking designs, patterns, and motifs. Now let me bombard you with more photos!
